About this Blog:


When I was younger, I used to love going to bookstores and finding really fancy notebooks. I would convince my parents to buy them with the intention of writing a journal, writing a story, or filling it with something that I cared about. Of course, after a day or two, I'd run out of ideas, and I'd have a mostly-empty but very fancy notebook sitting on a shelf in my room. Now I have a small container full of these notebooks hiding in a box in my room, most still empty.

More recently, I've been thinking about writing a blog, especially after being diagnosed as autistic and doing a lot of learning and thinking about that topic. So, when we were told to choose a hobby or an occupation for my first OT class, writing was one of my first thoughts. A blog would be a place to put all those thoughts and ideas, and it would give me somewhere to organize all the essays on disability studies that I got away with submitting during my undergrad. 

This blog will be cataloguing these efforts to write about my experiences in creating a blog, Blogception, if you will. I'll have a link for my other blog, which I will likely maintain even after this class, since I've been thinking about doing this for a while. While it's not a fancy notebook from an old bookstore, the internet doesn't run out of pages, so the inner child in me is looking forward to starting.

Media Representation and the Stories We Tell

This week in class, we talked about how having a diversity of stories is extremely important in creating a complete picture of a culture, and how this can help us to better achieve cultural humility as occupational therapists. This is an idea that I agree with very strongly, especially because, for the last two weeks I've been writing a post on autism representation in media for my new occupation. Hyperfocus vs Flow:

When I was in middle school, I was a huge bookworm. Reading a Warriors book under the desk was pretty common for me during math class, and any other moment of free time I had. I've always been the kind of person who got overly invested in my interests, sometimes to the detriment of my other concerns. Thankfully, these interests tended to come in waves, ebbing and flowing, giving me time to focus on the things that I actually needed to get done while also giving me something to enjoy during painfully boring algebra classes. Identifying Progress in My Blogging Experience

After a nice relaxing weekend, I was ready to get back into blogging. Brainstorming about a few different ideas, I decided to write a post about various "life hacks" that I use when doing chores. As an autistic person, there are a number of chore-related activities that I've learned to make easier on myself by modifying how I do what I need to do, whether that's wearing headphones and dishwashing gloves for doing dishes, or making a list of every single meal I like so that I have ideas when it comes time for meal-planning. I feel like I did a pretty good job on this one, although I hope I didn't make it sound too much like I have everything figured out, since I am still making it up as I go along.  I also recently started reading the book "The Reason I Jump," which was written by a thirteen-year-old nonspeaking autistic person, and I would highly recommend it.
